Tests for Malignant pleural Mesothelioma

Posted On / Leave a Comment
As already we know that mesothelioma cancer is very dangerous disease.we should be very careful in examine the disease. A well professional doctor should moniter the patient and ask him to go through some tests to confirm the disease.

Here are the some tests to identify mesothelioma cancer:-

    • CHEST X-RAY:- In this if the patient has pleural effusion or enlargement of lungs can be identified. But it is not helpful to the doctor as its has limited findings.
    • MRI SCAN:- Here soft tissues can be visible clearly. But it also has some draw backs.
    • POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY:- In this the malignant cells can be identified by their metabolic activity.some times this is recommended for pre treatment evaluation.
    • THORACENTESIS:- It is a procedure in which a needle is placed between the ribs in to pleural cavity and collect the pleural fluid and send to pathologist for evaluating any cancerous cells are present.
    • BIOPSY:- It is a procedure in which a part of the infected tissue is taken form the body. Then collected tissue sent to pathologist to identify any abnormality in the tissue or cells.

From the above tests Doctor identify the condition of mesothelioma. At what stage it is present. In the coming post i will expliain the stages of mesothelioma cancer.

Causes of Mesothelioma

Major causes:-

1)    Exposure to Asbestos is the main cause for mesothelioma in human beings.
Asbestos irritating the lining of cells that are present around the cavity.
As a result the lining cells are changed in to malignant and cause Mesothelioma

2)   When fibers of asbestos are inhaled then they enter in to trachea and reached the small bronchioles.
There they cause irritation to mesothelial cells and cause mesothelioma.

3)   Smoking  may likely to cause mesothelioma. But smoking alone does not cause mesothelioma.
For Example:  If the person is exposure to asbestos frequently and then having smoking habit .
Then he surely have high risk of causing Mesothelioma.

Minor causes:-

1)    Simian virus 40 (SV40): It is a virus that is found rarely in mesothelioma cells.
In some researches done on animals reveals that this virus induces mesothelioma.

2)    A silicate mineral namely Zeolite that is related to asbestos may cause mesothelioma.
some times it may cause exposure to therapeutic radiation that contains Thorium dioxide

Relation between Asbestos and Mesothelioma:-

Asbestos have very small tiny fibers if they are inhaled by the human beings they enter into the lungs.
There they irritates the lining of the pleura and causes inflammation and leads to conversion of mesothelial cells in to malignant and cause  Mesothelioma.

So be careful that are working in asbestos companies and use mouth masks to protect yourselves.

What is Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body's internal organs

Mesothelial cells are a layer of specialized cells that line the body cavities including the pleura  (outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall) .
*It may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity).
*The pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).
*The tunica vaginalis (a sac that surrounds the testis).
*The tissue formed by these cells is called mesothelium

The mesothelium contains both an outer and an inner layer. The inner layer surrounds the organs themselves, while the outer layer lines the body cavities.
The mesothelial cells themselves produce and secrete a small amount of lubricating fluid between the two layers that permits the organs to move smoothly against adjacent organs and structures.
Mesothelial cells can also grow abnormally, leading to the development of tumors. The tumors of the mesothelial cells can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). A malignant tumor of the mesothelium is called a malignant mesothelioma

Most mesothelial tumors are cancerous, malignant mesothelioma is  simply referred to as mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma of the lining of the lungs:-

Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally as strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Asbestos has been widely used in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation. If tiny asbestos particles float in the air, especially during the manufacturing process, they may be inhaled or swallowed.
